New research shows more than 7 million children in the United States are currently living with a grandparent.

According to the Pew Research Center, 3 million kids have a grandparent as their primary caregiver.

In many cases it's because the parents are too young, or are single, or simply can't afford to keep their own children.

The Pew Center's Gretchen Livingston says the numbers have actually been stabilizing though over the past few years.

"It suggests that perhaps the economy has started to recover, and there's less need for grandparents to be helping out by either living or caring for their grandchildren."

Livingston says the numbers spiked in 2009, but since then have actually been leveling off.
