Just a few miles from our states most recognizable landmark fire is burning dry tinder in the Black Hills. It is known as the Mine Draw Wildfire that started near the park shop in Custer State Park.

As of Wednesday evening the fire was estimated to be 150 acres. It’s located only six miles from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Officials are reporting that Highway 87 between Highway 16A and the Needles Highway has been closed.

The fire is being battled by some heavy-hitters including the Tatanka Hot Shots crew, two helicopters, multiple single engine tankers, along with engines and bulldozers.

In addition to those efforts, two other hotshot crews from Wyoming and Colorado are expected to arrive on Thursday.

The fire is half a mile north of the Legion Lake Fire that burned 54,000 acres in December, 2017.

Cause of the Mine Draw fire is unknown.
