South Dakota Finally Feels Like Summer by Memorial Day
Why Summer Doesn’t Feel Real Until Memorial Day Weekend
In South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, warm weather can show up long before summer officially begins. There are random 75 degree weekends in April, surprise heat waves in May, and at least one person wearing shorts the second temperatures hit 50. In spite of all that, it somehow doesn’t feel like real summer until Memorial Day weekend arrives.
Warm Weather Is One Thing, The Calendar Is Another
Sure, there are plenty of nice days leading up to summer. People start grilling again, patios fill up, and lawnmowers come out of storage after sitting untouched all winter. But mentally, most people are still waiting for Memorial Day weekend before fully switching into summer mode. It’s like the weather gives permission first, but the calendar makes it official.
The Unofficial Start of Summer
Memorial Day weekend has become the Midwest’s unofficial kickoff to summer. Cabins open up, lakes get crowded, and people suddenly start making plans every weekend through August. Even if summer technically starts later in June, nobody here waits that long.
The Mindset Changes Fast
There’s also a noticeable shift in attitude once Memorial Day weekend hits. The days are longer, people stay outside longer, schedules feel more relaxed, and everything starts revolving around cookouts, road trips, and finding ways to enjoy the warm weather while it lasts. After months of cold, people don’t waste time easing into summer. They jump straight in.
A Season Worth Celebrating
Maybe that’s why Memorial Day weekend feels so different in the Midwest. It’s more than just a long weekend. It’s the point where people finally feel like winter is fully behind them. And once that switch flips, summer suddenly feels real.
Now if we could only figure out a way to make summer last longer.
