July is the deadliest month of the year for lightning related fatalities and injuries in the United States- that according to the National Weather Service.

The reason for the uptick in injuries and fatalities is a larger number of thunderstorms occur this time of the year, and more people are vacationing and engaging in outdoor activities.

Todd Heitkamp, Meteorologist with the Sioux Falls National Weather Service, thinks some of the blame can also be placed on the fact that many of us now have weather apps on our smart phones - and that, in turn, has created a "complacency" among people.
