Fisherman’s Discovery May Solve 1960s Minnesota Mystery
Sartell, MN (KROC-AM News) - Investigators in central Minnesota are working to determine if a fisherman’s discovery might help solve a nearly 60-year-old mystery.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a fisherman last Sunday who reported observing an “anomaly” on his sonar finder in the Mississippi River near Sartell. The fisherman told the Sheriff’s Office that he believed it was a car in the river.

According to a news release, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol responded to the report and marked the location for “further research.” That led to a search by the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the discovery of a vehicle on the river bottom today.
The vehicle, believed to be from the 1960s, was half-filled with sediment. The Sheriff’s Office says a local tow company has been contacted to assist in pulling the vehicle from the river, but as of today, it remains in the water.
The news release says the Benton County Sheriff’s Office has contacted authorities in Stearns County concerning a missing person case from September 25, 1967. At this time, it is unknown if the vehicle in the river is related to that missing person case, but officials in both counties have indicated they are not aware of any other missing person cases of interest in that area.
