One Of MN’s Largest Bison Herds Is Tucked Away In Central MN
Did you know that one of the largest herds of bison in Minnesota is tucked away right here in Central Minnesota? It's a ranch that sits on 1,400 acres near Hillman that is home to the herd, owned by Chris and Stacy Kremer. On top of having a humongous herd, the Kremers also run Backroad Bison, a bison-based food business that sells bison meat products.
According to the business's website:
Tucked away at the end of a backroad in central Minnesota, one of the states largest herds of bison roam the 1400+ acre ranch known as Backroad Bison. Working alongside the family to restore and regenerate the ranch land, the herd rotationally grazes the diverse eco-system.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:
The bison or buffalo once thrived on Minnesota prairies. However, by 1900, settlement and slaughter by market hunters and the U.S. Army combined to reduce buffalo numbers to a handful of captive bison.
I was recently turned on to bison meat through our meal box service Hungry Root. I hadn't tried bison meat before, but since we made bison-meat tacos, I've been hooked on the protein.
My only problem was where I was going to find premium bison regularly. After running around to different grocery stores for the better part of a week I finally tried searching the web for it, which is how I learned about Backyard Bison, this giant ranch that offers up bison for sale.
I haven't seen anything that the ranch is open for tours, and the social media page that Backroad Bison runs for its store doesn't have regular hours listed, feel free to call though and ask. (320) 355-2549
