For more than 40 years, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has been doing their part to raise awareness of this deadly issue and they've got another event planned for this weekend .

August 26, MADD is teaming up with law enforcement agencies throughout South Dakota for 'Saturation Saturday', which will see staff and volunteers will sharing facts, victim stories, raising awareness on social media, and distributing materials on the dangers of impaired driving.

There will also be increased law enforcement patrols and sobriety checkpoints across the state.

The checkpoints are particularly effective. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they have been proven to reduce drunk driving deaths by 20%.

The timing of this event isn't a coincidence.

'Saturation Saturday' kicks off one of the busiest travel weeks of the year and comes at a time when traffic fatalities are at a 16-year high. A whopping 41% of fatal crashes during Labor Day weekend due to drunk driving.
