In the very near future, some drivers in South Dakota's Lincoln County will need to build a little extra time to get where they're going.

Tuesday (May 6), the Lincoln County Commission voted unanimously to reduce the speed limits on three stretches of county highways in Harrisburg and Tea.

WHICH ROADS ARE BEING IMPACTED?

  • 475th Avenue, from the intersection of 271st Street, going north about 3,100 feet, and from the intersection of 271st Street, going south about 2,800 feet
  • Segments of 469th Avenue from 57th Street, going south two miles to 85th Street, and from 273rd Street, going north about 2,700 feet
  • Segments of 273rd Street from 469th Avenue to Interstate-29, and from about 400 feet east of Tallgrass Avenue, going east to about 700 feet east of 473rd Avenue

HOW MUCH ARE THE LIMITS BEING LOWERED?

All three roads will see the limits drop from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour.

HIGHER TRAFFIC COUNTS ARE TO BLAME

At Tuesday's meeting, Highway Superintendent Terry Fluit told the commission that vehicles are already driving slower in these areas because of increased traffic and that it made sense to reduce the limits to be consistent with the traffic flow.

THE CHANGES WON'T HAPPEN RIGHT AWAY

The reduced limits will go into effect when county workers can install new signs along the roadways. No word on when that will be.
