One of the problems that many of us have to deal with in the aftermath of a major South Dakota snowstorm is where to put all of that white stuff that has accumulated on your property.

There's a little voice inside most of us that says 'Just dump it in the street. Nobody will notice.'

Think again.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is reminding us that it is illegal to place or dump excess snow on any highway right-of-way, driving surfaces, shoulders, and ditches.

If caught, you could end up in jail.

Violation of the anti-dumping law is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to one year in jail, $2,000 in fines, or both. You might also have to foot the bill if SDOT has to remove the illegally dumped snow.

Officials say that piling snow can make it hard to see oncoming traffic at intersections and can also increase the chances of snow drifting onto roadways.

Property owners are also being reminded it is their responsibility to remove snow from the ends of driveways and around their mailboxes and fire hydrants.
