Free Monday Movie In Sioux Falls Showing 'Tin Cup' August 17th

You don't get many opportunities to enjoy a night of free entertainment these days, but you'll have your chance later this month in downtown Sioux Falls.

August 17th is the next Free Monday Movie at the State Theater on Phillips Avenue. Showtime is 7:00 PM.

This month's feature film is Tin Cup.

This 1996 film stars Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, Cheech Marin, and Don Johnson.

It follows Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy (Costner), a former golf prodigy who lost his chance to become a professional golfer when he attempted a risky shot for the final round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament rather than taking a safer shot. He owns a ramshackle driving range in West Texas, where he drinks and hangs out with his pal Romeo Posar and their friends.

He eventually finds his way back to professional golf in a very unconventional way.

'Tin Cup' earned $75.8 million against a $45 million budget and earned Costner a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category.

The Sioux Falls showing is open to AARP members and non-members alike. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance.

From Blockbusters to Hidden Gems: 35 Movies That Take Place in South Dakota

When it comes to South Dakota and Hollywood, we've seen our fair share of films that have used our state as the backdrop for a number of productions over the years. They may not have always filmed here, but movie folk love to set stories here.

We're all familiar with the blockbusters like 1990's Dances With Wolves, 1959's North By Northwest, and more recently, 2007's National Treasure: Book of Secrets. But our state's life on the big screen goes back nearly 100 years.

According to IMDb, it all started with Courtin' Wildcats, a 1929 film which, like so many of the films on this list, is a Western set in the time before South Dakota became a state in 1889.

I was in Canton, SD, and I happened upon a new mural.

It was really cool and that got me thinking that I know of a few murals in Sioux Falls, but I bet there's more than I realize. So, I put it out on social media for the people of Sioux Falls to tell me where all the murals are!

A few of them I had never seen, or never even been to that part of town, and a few of them, I drive by all the time and never noticed!

I know a few businesses have murals inside their establishments, but I decided to keep it to murals that are totally open for the public to see. No need to be 21!
