Tis the season!

Every state has its traditions throughout the year, here in South Dakota this time of year, one of ours is naming snowplows. It says a lot about the state, doesn't it, huh?

Yep, it's almost that time of year again when snowplows will be patrolling city streets, county roads, and Interstate highways.

That's why the South Dakota Department of Transportation has again opened up the contest window to start casting your vote to name twelve different snowplows in various geographical areas throughout the state.

2023 marks the 4th year the contest has been underway, and Dakota News Now reports over the previous three-year period, thousands of names have been submitted throughout the state by classrooms, daycares, businesses, retirement communities, and individuals.

South Dakota Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt told Dakota News Now, “The 2022-23 winter season was definitely one for the record books.  Our SDDOT winter operations staff worked countless hours to remove snow in some of the toughest winter weather conditions experienced in recent years. The snowplow contest is a fun, yet purposeful, way to interact with the public to encourage usage of vital winter weather-related resources like SD511.”

The statewide snowplow naming contest runs now through November 30th. You can take a peek at the contest rules and fill out an entry form here.

Let's see, what would be some good names for snowplows, how about something like "Darth Blader", "Catch My Drift", or "Edgar Allan Snow." Or, if you're a big music fan, you might consider submitting something like "Alice Scooper", "Sleetwood Mac", or possibly "Scoop Dog."

According to Dakota News Now, once the contest closes, South Dakota of Transportation staff will vote on their favorite entries, and announce the winning names in December.

Good luck!

Oh, I just thought of one more classic snowplow name, "Sled Zeppelin."

5 Things South Dakota Gave the World

South Dakota may not get much respect. We get a blizzard and it's a footnote on the national scene, but if Florida gets a bit chilly it's breaking news. But, maybe it's fine to be forgotten about. We kind of like being left alone on our quiet piece of the plains.

South Dakota has given a lot to the world though. Not just giant mountain carvings and settings for HBO shows, but awesome things that the rest of the world should thank us for.
