
South Dakota Highway Patrol Is Looking for Troopers

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden wants to increase the presence of the South Dakota Highway Patrol in Sioux Falls, and the agency now has some openings.
Dakota News Now is reporting that the South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently on the prowl for nine new officers.

Captain Robert Mayer with the Highway Patrol told Dakota News Now that the agency is looking for some highly motivated individuals who have a good sense of responsibility and want to help keep South Dakota residents safe.
What's a Highway Patrol Officer's job description?
According to Mayer, they are tasked with investigating crashes. Taking illegal drugs off the road, drunk drivers off the road, providing help in emergency situations, and of course, the main thing, ensuring that drivers comply with state traffic laws. Highway Patrol officers help to make sure motorists are driving in a safe manner by enforcing state speeding regulations.

How do you become a South Dakota State Trooper?
Once you apply, and if you're accepted, you will attend the standard law enforcement training academy in Pierre. Then you go through a ten week field traing process. Upon you've completed all of that, you will actually be on the road as a trooper on your own.
According to Dakota News Now, the whole application process from start to finish takes about a year before you are on your own as a certified state trooper.
It's not easy, but, it is rewarding.
