One thing dropping faster right now than Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating age range is the price of gas in South Dakota, and NOBODY is complaining.

Cue the heavenly choir, because relief is finally pulling up to the pump.

Gas prices aren’t just sliding in South Dakota; they’re trending downward across the entire country. According to GasBuddy, the national average price for a gallon of gas has officially dipped below the $3 mark, hovering comfortably between $2.80 and $2.82. That’s a milestone we haven’t seen since the early days of the pandemic, and it’s bringing smiles to commuters, road-trippers, and anyone tasked with having to swipe a card at the pump.

Here in the Rushmore State, the news gets even better. Dakota News Now reports that South Dakota’s average gas price currently sits around $2.49 per gallon. That’s nearly five cents cheaper than just a week ago, more than 15 cents lower than a month back, and almost 26 cents cheaper than this time last year. In other words, your wallet just caught a much-needed breather for a change.

Of course, gas prices still depend on where you’re filling up. On January 4, GasBuddy reported the cheapest gallon in the state at a jaw-dropping $2.02, while the most expensive clocked in at $3.41, a spread of $1.39 that could make even the calmest driver utter a few colorful words under their breath.

And here in Sioux Falls, one station recently displayed gas for $1.98 a gallon for a short time. Yes, you read that right. A price so shocking it probably caused more than a few drivers to slam the brakes and check their calendars to see if they’d accidentally time-travelled back to 2020.

Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a friendly year for fuel costs. GasBuddy predicts that Americans will spend $11 billion less on gas this year than they did in 2025, proof that sometimes the road ahead really is friendlier and comes with a whole lot less pain at the pump.
