What’s Fueling The Surge In Sioux Falls Population Growth?
Sioux Falls isn’t just growing, it’s sprinting towards a major population milestone.
South Dakota’s largest city is now only a few hundred residents away from hitting 225,000 people within city limits, a number that once seemed almost unthinkable. According to Pigeon 605, Sioux Falls wrapped up 2025 with an official population of 224,676, representing a 2.3 percent increase from the previous year. In real terms, that means 5,088 new residents chose to make Sioux Falls home in just one year.
To put that growth into perspective, Mayor Paul TenHaken has overseen an expansion equivalent to adding “half of Rapid City” or “three Pierres” during his eight years in office. That kind of growth doesn’t just show up on a spreadsheet; it’s felt every day on busy corridors like 41st Street and Louise Avenue, and throughout every other major congested intersection across the city.

So what’s driving the boom?
Economic development is the clear engine behind Sioux Falls’ surge. TenHaken told Pigeon 605 that while South Dakota as a whole grew by about 4 percent between 2020 and 2024, Sioux Falls alone jumped by a staggering 12 percent during that same period. The city continues to attract new businesses, job opportunities, and residents looking for a strong economy paired with a high quality of life.
A look back over the past four decades highlights just how dramatic the rise has been. In 1985, Sioux Falls was home to roughly 92,000 people. By 1995, that number had climbed to nearly 120,000. In 2005, the population crossed 140,000, and by 2015, it had soared to almost 173,000 residents. Today’s numbers show that growth has not slowed; it’s accelerating.

Looking ahead, projections suggest the four-county Sioux Falls metro area could reach 360,000 residents by 2030 and a remarkable 500,000 by 2050. Currently, the metro population sits around 308,000, meaning most of South Dakota’s future growth is expected to land squarely in the Sioux Falls region.
Sioux Falls biggest challenge now is keeping pace.
As TenHaken told Pigeon 605, city leaders will need to ensure Sioux Falls continues generating enough tax revenue and infrastructure investment to support an additional 5,000 to 6,000 new residents each year.
One thing is clear: Sioux Falls growth story is far from finished, and the next chapter may be its biggest yet.
