If you've been meaning to make one more trip to the pool this summer, now's the time.

The City of Sioux Falls will close its outdoor pools for the season on Sunday, August 9, bringing the curtain down on what turned out to be one of the busiest summers yet.

More than 167,000 swimmers cooled off at city pools this season - a huge jump from last year. Part of that increase came thanks to the return of the newly rebuilt McKennan Wading Pool, which reopened after being closed throughout 2025 for construction.

From cannonballs and swimming lessons to lazy afternoons floating in the sun, Sioux Falls certainly made the most of the hot summer months.

But don't dry off just yet.

End-of-Season Splash: Swimming Gone to the Dogs!

Before the water is drained, the city is bringing back one of its favorite end-of-summer traditions: Swimming Gone to the Dogs.

On Tuesday, August 11, dogs can take over Terrace Park Family Aquatic Center, followed by Laurel Oak Family Aquatic Center on Thursday, August 13. Both events run from 5:30 to 7 PM. Admission is free, and each person may bring up to two well-behaved dogs that are current on their vaccinations.

While the outdoor pools are closing, summer fun isn't completely over.

Several splash pads will stay open into September. Pioneer and Hayward Splash Pads will move to weekend-only hours beginning August 23 before closing after Labor Day. The Great Plains Zoo Splash Pad will also remain open through Labor Day, while the splash pad at Jacobson Plaza keeps the water flowing until September 20, giving families a few extra weeks to beat the late-summer heat.

Year-Round Swimming: Indoor Pools Await

And if you're still not ready to trade swimsuits for sweatshirts, the city's indoor pools at the Midco Aquatic Center and Westside Recreation Center are open year-round. Better yet, summer swim passes remain valid there through Labor Day.

So if summer has flown by a little too quickly, consider this your reminder: there's still time for one more splash.
