If it feels like orange cones are taking over Sioux Falls, you’re not imagining it. Construction season is in full swing across the Sioux Empire, and starting Monday, June 22, drivers can expect even more delays on some of the city’s busiest streets.

According to Dakota News Now, multiple road and utility projects are ramping up across Sioux Falls, bringing lane closures, detours, and temporary access issues.

Here’s a breakdown of the biggest trouble spots to watch:

Sycamore Avenue continues to become Construction Central in Sioux Falls. Beginning Monday morning at 8:30, Sycamore will be closed between 23rd Street and 26th Street for a sidewalk project. The closure is expected to last through Friday, June 26.

Further south, additional work begins the same day. Southbound lanes of Sycamore Avenue will close from 57th Street to 69th Street for crack sealing. Once that work wraps up, crews will shift to the northbound lanes. Expect delays in this area for about a week.

Drivers in northeast Sioux Falls near Linwood Park should prepare for intermittent disruptions starting Monday. Crews will repair sanitary sewer lines between North Meyer Lane and North Sycamore Avenue and between East 6th Street and East 10th Street.

This project will bring short-term lane closures, road restrictions, and limited driveway access as work progresses. Construction in this neighborhood is expected to last around three weeks.

Kiwanis Avenue is another area in Sioux Falls seeing significant work. Starting Tuesday, June 23, North Kiwanis Avenue will be reduced to one lane between 8th Street and 9th Street for curb ramp repairs. Sidewalks on the east side will also be closed through Friday, June 26. South Kiwanis Avenue will be fully closed between Sheldon Lane and 46th Street for storm drainage repairs. Drivers will be detoured to Western Avenue, and the nearby recreational trail will also be shut down. This closure is expected to last about two weeks.

Construction near Avera McKennan Hospital remains a long-term headache for Sioux Falls commuters right now as well. Beginning Tuesday, the intersection of 20th Street and 9th Avenue will be closed as crews continue reconstructing 20th Street through the campus. Traffic will dead-end near 9th Avenue, with through traffic encouraged to use 17th or 26th Streets instead. Get traffic and pedestrian access info here. This project is expected to impact motorists into early November.
