How would you describe the weather in South Dakota this winter? The word "Abnormal" comes to mind.

This South Dakota winter has definitely been unusual, to say the least, especially here in the Sioux Falls area. We've experienced a rollercoaster of temperatures, and very little, and I do mean very little snow accumulation. At last check, I believe Sioux Falls has only seen something like a total of 5 inches of snow so far this winter season! That is crazy!

Have you seen the forecasted temps for this week in Sioux Falls? It's gonna be downright tropical for January. Break out the Bermuda shorts and beach chairs baby!

Word has it we could set some new record high temps in the state this week it's going to be that nice out.

With all the unseasonable weather we've been having so far this year, I decided to do a little investigative work when it comes to record high temperatures in the state during what is typically the two coldest months of the year in South Dakota, January, and February.

According to the gang at the National Weather Service, the warmest temperature ever recorded in January in South Dakota was set back in 1983, when the high temp reached 66°F in Pierre.

Before that, the record high in the state during the month of January was 63°F. That happened in Aberdeen, all the way back in 1935.

The month of February can and usually is a frigid one in South Dakota. However, on February 27th, 2016, in Mobridge, it felt like a beautiful springtime day when the temp reached a balmy 73°F. To date that is the warmest temperature ever recorded in the state during February.

To illustrate just how nutty the temps are going to be over the next several days, typically the highs in South Dakota during January are BELOW 32°F, while the low temps hover around 10°F.

Not the case this week in the Sioux Falls area, as we're expected to reach 52° today, 46° Wednesday, 51° Thursday, and 40° on Friday.

Enjoy it while it lasts, the long-range forecast heading into the first week of February has us with single-digit highs again. Oh, joy!

Time to hop back on the rollercoaster again!
