Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa On Worst Winters State List
Thrillist is a travel website that is constantly looking for the best of the best. But in this case, they are comparing all 50 states in terms of winter misery. So, fortunately, or unfortunately this is where our tri-state region shines - miserable winters!
Thrillist believes that underneath all that "Minnesota nice" you might encounter in the "land of 10,000 lakes" beats the heart of a state that is one of the most miserable places to be in the wintertime. With temps that can hit minus 60 and parts of the state getting 170 inches of snow, they have a right to be downright crabby in the winter. Because of this Minnesota earns the rank of second most miserable state in winter.
South Dakota's rank on this travel list this year is number four. The Thrillist assessment of our South Dakota winters is that they "are harsh and completely unpredictable". If last winter and what we've experienced so far this year is any indication, their understanding of our winters is dead on.
Iowa's judgment for being a miserable winter state came from the Thrillist author's personal experience driving through the state during a winter whiteout snowstorm. That instance was terrifying enough to warrant putting Iowa in sixth place on the most miserable winter states list.
Here are the Top Ten Most Miserable States in the Winter:
