Deadly Cold Wind Chills For Minnesota Iowa, and South Dakota

If you are traveling this week be careful. Be prepared. It could be one of the coldest Christmas holidays for Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the next few days are forecast to be dangerously cold.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of northwest Iowa, west central Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska, central South Dakota, east central South Dakota, south-central

South Dakota, and southeast South Dakota.

DAY ONE...Monday Tonight

Patchy light snow will be possible today but amounts will be minor. A little light freezing drizzle will also be possible in parts of northwest Iowa this afternoon and evening, but again, the amounts will be minor.

Wind chills will be -15 below to -30 below zero late tonight into Tuesday morning. The coldest readings will be in central South Dakota.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

The next chance for snow will come on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Confidence is still relatively low on the exact timing and placement of this snowfall, but confidence is increasing for a potentially impactful event roughly late Wednesday night through Thursday night for a combination of snow and low visibility in blowing and drifting snow.

Wind gusts during this time could exceed 40 mph. Behind this system, temperatures will trend sharply downward with the potential for wind chills of -35 to -50 late Wednesday night into Saturday.
