The team at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls knows how to predict the weather. But I don't think they saw this tragic accident coming.

Over the weekend, on early Saturday morning, a young driver struck the office of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. The damage was severe enough that they needed backup from their friends at the National Weather Service in Aberdeen.

Our partners at Dakota News Now share that Sioux Falls Police confirmed the driver was a 17-year-old who died from her injuries. Here's the latest:

According to Sgt. Travis Olsen with the Sioux Falls Police Department, at around 1:55 a.m., emergency personnel were called to Benson Road and Minnesota Avenue for a crash.

It was discovered that a Nissan SUV was traveling west on Benson Road when the driver failed to negotiate the T-intersection at Minnesota Avenue.

The vehicle vaulted onto the grounds of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport and came to rest in an occupied building west of the intersection.

Four people were discovered on the scene with very serious injuries. They were all transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The crash is still under investigation, and the names of those involved have not been released. You can read more details here.

On Monday, November 24th, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls shared photos of the serious aftermath of the accident in a Facebook post.

Thanks to the Weather Team in Aberdeen, weather updates never stopped, and the Sioux Empire continued to have the latest forecast details throughout the weekend.

Once the incident occurred the on-duty forecaster contacted NWS Aberdeen to begin providing service back up, in other words assume our forecast responsibilities. As daylight appeared later that morning, it was quickly realized that we would not be able to allow our staff to occupy the building until the hole could be sealed and the structure of the building secured. Therefore, NWS Aberdeen continued to provide the forecast services for our office in a seamless way. By design every NWS office has multiple offices that can provide forecast services for the impacted office without missing a beat.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, this is a great reminder to be thankful for what we have in life. Always be safe when you're on the road and never take life for granted.
