He's not a flying squirrel like Rocky (You younger people might not know about Rocky the Flying Squirrel, but your dad and mom do).

No, this fella doesn't fly, at least not that I know of. But he's a feisty little guy.

And he's black. Yes, Hatfield is a rare black squirrel living behind the radio station here in Sioux Falls.

You don't see black squirrels every day. So I did some detailed extensive research (Ok, ok, I googled it) and found out they're a melanistic subgroup of squirrels with black fur.

So what does that mean? It's too detailed for our purposes, but you can read all about it here.

Anyway, back to our Hatfield. He apparently has claimed an empty bird next as his own. And along comes another squirrel, one we'll call McCoy. Now, McCoy is just a regular 'ol brown squirrel, the kind we see anywhere and everywhere. You know, the one you hopefully missed on your way to work.

McCoy has decided that the empty bird nest is his, and who knows, maybe it was. But our rare black squirrel Hatfield isn't about to give up his new treasure. And so they go at it. Behind the radio station, there are a number of trees, brush, branches, and other assorted growth. And whenever McCoy comes up the tree towards Hatfield's new (old) nest, the fireworks begin.

I didn't know squirrels could be so noisy. I don't know what they're yelling at each other, but I'll bet there's a few, uh...adult squirrel words being flung around. And did you know squirrels are fast? I mean, really 'fleet of paw'.

So far, Hatfield has been able to successfully defend the castle, repelling attack after attack from McCoy. But for how long? We'll have to wait and see.

Until then, the Hatfield and McCoy feud rages on.
