Beloved Iowa Bakery To Close Its Doors After 49 Years in Business

A historic bakery in Iowa made the shocking announcement that its doors will be closing after almost 50 years in business.

The Dutch Bakery in Orange City, Iowa will be closing on Saturday, December 30th after 49 years of making delicious sweets for the community. The owner plans to sell the building and auction off all the bakery’s equipment.

Owner of Dutch Bakery Loren Mulder tells KTIV in Iowa that closing his cherished bakery. But he explains the last 15 years have truly been a "labor of love."

As a former farmer, Loren Mulder spent a lot of early mornings and long days making tasty sweets for the hungry Orange City residents and Iowans who travel for the baked goods at the Dutch Bakery. Loren says that deciding to close Dutch Bakery was not an easy decision, but it's been an incredible journey. It was just time to close this chapter.

“I love what I’m doing. And I would I would love to stay here, I’m 63. I’d like to have worked here for another seven years or so, but now the reality is, it’s getting close to not profitable.”

Some of the most popular pastries Iowa patrons loved at Dutch Bakery include the Almond Patty, the Dutch Letter, the Almond Pretzel, and delectable cupcakes.

Loren Mulder is satisfied with the work he accomplished at the Dutch Bakery. More importantly, Loren is proud that he kept "those Dutch traditions alive" in Orange City.
