Very few of us would object to who makes our delicious tomato pie, as long as it was prepared properly, with care and promptness. There is one Iowa-based convenience store that stands a slice above the rest in this department, but even they are feeling the effects of widespread labor shortages.

New legislation is on the table in the Hawkeye state to address the latter as officials with Casey's want an additional age group to be allowed to roll out the dough (and subsequently roll IN the dough).

First, if you weren't aware, there is a minimum age for people allowed to operate commercial pizza-making equipment and in Iowa, it is 18.

Radio Iowa says Casey's has asked the Iowa state legislature to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to be allowed to learn and operate their pizza dough rolling machines, so they can hire more employees.

Tom Cope is a lobbyist for Casey's and said

Casey’s, like any other employer across the state of Iowa, we’re struggling in finding employees

The Iowa Federation of Labor might have an issue. Peter Hird questions whether "increased child labor" is the answer to workforce shortages. He based his objection on two pieces of legislation, one adopted by Iowa lawmakers last year allowing teens to operate rides at amusement parks and another that would let older teens work in child care facilities, without adult supervision.

There's an additional rub to the idea of minors using the pizza equipment, according to Cedar Rapids Democratic senator Todd Taylor. He says it's fine to let them make the pizza. The bigger concern on his part is the danger of them performing maintenance on the machines. He'd like assurance this will be kept in check before he votes to allow the new rule to take effect, which is, allowed by federal law, but is currently against state law in Iowa, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
