An adult entertainment venue in Iowa is in hot water with its employees. Nine exotic dancers have joined a class action lawsuit that alleges the club made the dancers work without a salary and were then forced to pay the owner for the right to earn tips.

The Des Moines Register reports that the initial lawsuit was filed in 2022 by former dancer Cierra Turner against Pretty Woman Inc., which owns the adult club Beach Girls in West Des Moines, Iowa. The lawsuit alleges violations of state and federal minimum wage laws unjust enrichment and unjust tip sharing. Turner's attorneys are looking to turn the lawsuit into a class action legal filing, allowing them to combine the claims of multiple dancers into one proceeding, according to the Register.

The Register reports that the process requires attorneys and the court to notify other dancers at Beach Girls of their rights to join the lawsuit if they so choose. After receiving notice, they can decide if they want to join the lawsuit as co-plaintiffs. They have 90 days to decide.

In recent weeks, nine additional dancers have joined the lawsuit. Attorneys claim that the club misclassified its dancers as "independent contractors" for whom minimum wage laws did not apply. I'm no legal expert, but I'd expect these women to win. It doesn't matter what your profession is, you have the right to earn wages.
