History TV Visits the Tulare, SD Petroglyph Rock
The folks from the History Channel show Found made a stop in Tulare, South Dakota to check out the ancient carved rock that sits in front of the municipal building.
The rock originally sat near the Turtle River in Spink County, South Dakota. It was later moved into town by European settlers.
The carvings of animals and other petroglyphs are thought to have been made by the ancestors of modern Native Americans.
The History researchers say that the carvings were likely made during the Woodland Period of North American cultures. This broad span of time included the years 1000 BC to 100 AD.
It's though that the people of that time were mobile hunter-gathers. They may have carved on the stone as they passed the site during yearly migrations.
