To remember the fallen and honor their lives, the White House has proclaimed the weekend prior to September 11th as National Days of Service and Remembrance.

The President has called for all flags to be at half-staff on Monday September 11. Governor Daugaard is requesting that flags be at half-staff from 8:00 AM until sunset, as we honor those who have lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

The tradition of flags being flown at half mast, or half staff dates back to the 17th century, when it was believed the space above the lowered flag was to make room for what was known as the invisible flag of death.  Proper protocol directs those who lower the flag at sunset to first of all raise the flag to the top position for a moment, and then lower it fully and remove.
