The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for southeast South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, as well as northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.

The Watch is in effect from Friday morning through Sunday evening (June 20-22, 2025).

The Sioux Empire is forecast to see temperatures near 100 degrees Friday and Saturday. Those temperatures combined with rising humidity will create heat index values near 110 degrees. Plus, it's not going to cool off much at night.

The hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
