"Barely Breathing" was Duncan Sheik's biggest and really only pop music hit. Allegedly, It was written as a last resort just to finish his album.

According to Wikipedia:

...entering the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard charts, peaking at #16, and holding steady for 55 weeks. "Barely Breathing" also hit #19 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart.[1] At the time, it was the fourth longest-running single in the Hot 100.[2] It ranked #88 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s, and #8 on their 40 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s list.

In '96 and '97 you couldn't go anywhere without hearing that song. It was everywhere. Recently-ish it even popped up in the 4th season of Glee. It was done as a duet between Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer.

Duncan went on to write music for the Broadway show Spring Awakening and that totally revived his career. You may not hear him on the radio, but he's making bank on Broadway.
