The Office of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service and other agencies schedule the day as way to draw attention the dangers of winter weather.
It seems like everyone is predicting an early and very loooooong winter due to the cooler than normal summer we experienced, but it may not as bad as we're all fearing.
The Nation Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 1pm Thursday until 7am Friday for Sioux Falls. The main threats will be heavy snow and blowing snow.
The first day of spring is officially March 20th, but everyone who lives in South Dakota knows that doesn't mean anything! Have you hit your winter breaking point?
UPDATE: I-90 westbound is now open between Sioux Falls and Salem. Although the road is open the South Dakota Department of Transportation advises that traveling will still be dangerous because of the conditions.
