Over 30 million Americans suffer from kidney disease. It is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States. The two major causes of kidney disease are, diabetes and high blood pressure. What do all of these ailments have in common? Many people are oblivious to the fact that they have any or all of these problems.

March is National Kidney Month and everyone is urged to give these vital organs a second thought. The National Kidney Foundation of the Dakotas (NKF/Dakotas) aims to inform and educate people about kidney health and disease with the ultimate goal of: diagnosis, treatment and ultimately - prevention.

You can take an online kidney quiz to find out if you are at risk for kidney disease. And you can also find out more about and support the National Kidney Foundation/Dakotas by attending one of their upcoming events:

  • Kidney Walk Kick Off - Thursday, March 1, from 5 to 7 PM at the Falls Overlook Cafe at Falls Park. You'll learn about the work of the NKF/Dakotas, while enjoying light refreshments. They'll share their plans for what they'd like to accomplish in the next year and then you can watch the lighting of the falls orange, to commemorate Americans with kidney disease. No tickets needed.
  • Rat Pack Vegas Night - Friday, March 9. This NKF/Dakotas celebration contains two events in one evening at the Holiday Inn City Centre's Starlite Room. The VIP reception and dinner begins at 5:30 PM (VIP tickets must be purchased by March 2) and general admission with light appetizers begins at 8 PM. The entire evening includes a silent auction, Vegas-style games, and live music from Ledfoot. General admission tickets can be purchased at the door and online.
