49-year old Kevin Sunderland was driving on Highway 44 near Lennox Thursday morning (November 20) when he collided with a semi and trailer backing into a driveway. He was then hit from behind by another car.

The photo above was posted by Sunderland's wife Heidi with the caption 'Seatbelts do save lives. Please buckle up'.

Sunderland sustained numerous broken bones and is in serious condition in the hospital but his wife is crediting Kevin's seatbelt and 'an angel riding with him' for the fact that he will survive this terrible wreck.

I admit that I was someone who didn't wear a seatbelt during the first 15-20 years I could drive. Once I got into my mid 30's I guess I became a bit more aware at just how many bad drivers are on the road every day and began using my seatbelt a little more frequently.

Within a few years, the wonderful world of smart phones, iPods, iPads and more started distracting drivers even more than before. I began buckling up even if I'm only going two blocks to the convenience store.

With the holiday season here, there's a good chance you're going to be driving somewhere to spend time with people you love. Let this serve as a reminder to buckle up. Please be safe.

Peace.
