School children in the Sioux Falls School system have been waiting for this time of year.  It's time to plant!

Through Ground Works-Midwest McGovern Middle School students in grades 6-8 will be planting in the 9 teaching garden beds on Thursday, May 12, 2016.

Approximately 60 students have started their own plants under a grow light system developed by Ground Works-Midwest in collaboration with a grant from Xcel Energy. They have spent this week preparing the garden bed soil and sectioning off each teaching garden bed into 1 foot squares in anticipation of planting their 9 theme gardens that range from a Stone Soup teaching garden to Purple Passion to honor their school colors.

According to McGovern Middle School Guidance Counselor, Tina Hawkins, she believes the teaching garden is not only teaching students about the science behind growing their own food, it is empowering students to put that education into practice at home and at school.

Thursdays planting begins at 1:30 PM.
