The final day of May is always 'Save Your Hearing Day,' which leads me into today's topic of conversation - don't be dumb like me, save your hearing!

I wish someone would've taken me aside when I was younger and told me to turn down the volume. Then maybe I wouldn't be battling a constant ringing in my ears today.

While growing up on the farm, and working around loud equipment on a daily basis, we never once thought about wearing noise reducing headphones.

Combine that with the old-fashioned tractor radios that we used to mount on the fenders, and you've got yourself the makings for some serious hearing loss.

And then if that wasn't enough, I decided to go into a field of work that required me to wear headphones on a daily basis - headphones turned up way too loud.

The first few years of my radio career I worked primarily for a rock radio station. And what does a naive kid in his 20's do? Crank the music way too loud for his own good.

If I could offer the younger generation one bit of advice I would suggest they not listen to their music at such a loud level. It all adds up the older you get.

Also, start wearing noise reducing headphones while mowing the lawn. You may look funny, but you'll thank me in the long run.
