Target was born in Minnesota and its corporate headquarters are still here, but which state has the most Target store locations? And, no, it's not Minnesota.

When you think of those well-known, Fortune 500 companies that are based here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Target has to be near the top of that list. Not only is the Target store brand synonymous with Minnesota, but two of our high-profile venues including Target Field and Target Center are named after the retail giant.

And, of course, Target has a long history here in the North Star State. This Minn Post story notes that the Dayton company, which owned Dayton's department stores, opened the very first Target store in Roseville back in 1962. The store was an experimental concept that would 'focus on quality and customer experience as well as price point,' Minn Post said.

Well, that experiment worked, and there are now over 2,000 Targets across the U.S. But would you be surprised to know that the Gopher State is NOT home to the most Target store locations? It's true. In fact, Minnesota is closer to the middle of the pack when it comes to the number of Targets located in each state.

According to the Target store directory, there are currently 60 different Target store locations sprinkled throughout the Bold North in 2024. You'll find Targets everywhere in Minnesota from Alexandria to Woodbury, with many locations located in the Twin Cities metro, and in smaller, outstate locations like Moorhead and Wilmar.

But to find the state with the most Target locations, you'll first need to figure out which state has the biggest population. And for that, you'll need to head west, all the way to the West Coast and the Golden State of California, which currently has 208 Target store locations. Of course, the population of California in 2024 is over 39 million, so that makes sense. (Minnesota's 2024 population is around 5.78 million, by the way.)

Texas is next with 96 Targets, followed by Florida with 85 and New York State with 75. Illinois rounds out the top five with 72 different Target locations. Behind the Cheddar Curtain over in America's Dairyland of Wisconsin, you'll find 32 Targets, while our neighbors to the south down in Iowa boast 19 Target locations.

And while Target might be Minnesota's most well-known brand, it's not the only common item (if you can call a store an item) that has been invented here. Keep scrolling to check out some other well-known things that also got their start here in Minnesota.
