We Now Know The Creepiest Place in Minnesota

There are lots of different Halloween attractions designed to give you the creeps all around the Land of 10,000 Lakes this time of year, but only one of them has just been called the Creepiest Place in Minnesota.

'Creepy' is a word that's a tad difficult to define. We likely all know what creepy is when we're confronted with it, but according to the crew over at Miriam-Webster, 'creepy' is defined as "producing a nervous shivery apprehension," or something that's "annoyingly unpleasant."

And both of those definitions would fit the many different entries on this new list of The Creepiest Places in All 50 States, compiled by the folks over at HGTV. From rundown prisons to defunct hospitals to hotels with resident ghosts, they've done the research to discover the creepiest spot in every U.S. state, the story says.

So just which place is the Creepiest Place in Minnesota? Well, according to HGTV, that would be the Wabasha Street Caves in St. Paul. They're located at 216 Wabasha Street in Minnesota's capital city.

According to Explore Minnesota, the Wabasha Street Caves are a network of extensive caves that were carved into the sandstone hillside of St. Paul back in the 1800s for various mining ventures. Later, the Caves were used as a mushroom farm and then developed as a restaurant and casino and became a popular place for gangsters during the 1930s following prohibition.

What makes them so creepy? According to the HGTV story:

During Prohibition, these former mining caves in St. Paul were turned into a speakeasy that became a hotspot for gangsters including John Dillinger and Ma Barker. Rumor has it that three gangsters who were gunned down in the caves are buried under the floors. Though the bodies haven’t been found, you can see the bullet holes from the incident to this day.

These days, the Wabasha Street Caves offer tours and is also an event venue for Minnesotans to host things like weddings, birthday parties, proms, concerts and other events. The Caves are also hosting a series of Halloween-themed events and tours, like the Lost Souls Tours or Caves and Graves Bus Tours. A series of special shows called 'Afterlife: The Experience' are also being held throughout October.

You can see more about the Caves in the video below. I've not been there, but I'm not sure I'd call these caves 'creepy' necessarily. They DO look incredibly interesting, however, especially given the varied things they've hosted over the years.
