Iowa Teen Caught Going Over 120 mph On a Suspended License
An Iowa teenager landed in the hottest of waters after being caught going well over 100 mph near Ottumwa. The kicker? He was driving on a suspended license.
The Iowa State Patrol are hoping this serves as a reminder for parents to talk to their children who are just starting to drive or are actively learning the Rules of the Road about the dangers of excessive speed.
Iowa State Troopers clocked the 17-year-old motorist traveling at over 123 mph at the end of July. If that wasn't bad enough, the driver allegedly drove through backyards and neighborhoods before eventually stopping once being tailed by police. The teen was also driving on a suspended license.
The Iowa State Patrol released a statement on their Facebook page, hoping it would be a warning to parents to talk to their children about the dangers of speeding:
Troopers Meislahn and Ramiro encountered a sobering incident involving a teen driver reaching speeds of 123 MPH! The driver, with an already suspended license, drove through backyards and neighborhoods before stopping. It's a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.
We must continue to work together to enhance driver education and responsibility among our youth. Parents, have you had the safe driving talk with your teens? Let's work together to keep our roads safe for everyone! - per the Iowa State Patrol's Facebook page
This story itself reminded me of when I dug into records in an attempt to find the fastest speeding ticket ever issued in the state of Iowa. It stemmed from a wild chase in 2009.
The man who holds the unofficially official record as the fastest speeder in the state of Iowa is James Foldenauer. In 2009, Foldenauer put his 2003 Suzuki Hayabusa to the test. The bike itself is capable of 200 mph with some modifications, per Motor Authority. He eluded police, but was still being monitored by Iowa State Patrol clocking him via aircraft.
Foldenauer weaved in and out of traffic, dodged cars, traveled on shoulders, and more in effort to avoid police custody. Police followed him all the way to his Council Bluffs residence.
At peak speed, Foldenauer's bright orange Suzuki bike reached an eye-popping 188 mph. It's hard to conceptualize speeds of that caliber, especially on roadways, as that is more than 100 mph that you'd travel on any highway in America.
The true relief in this story is that no one was hurt. Read more about Iowa's super-speeder on KCCI's website.
