Using patience and driving defensively, knowing that not everyone on the road is a good driver, is a good way to travel. But it seems that driving in and around Sioux Falls is getting more intense daily. Phone usage, not being aware, or simply not knowing the rules of the road are big factors.

Some time ago, we asked what the biggest pet peeve for Sioux Falls drivers was. The responses did not disappoint.

Double turn lanes: One of the most frustrating maneuvers on the road today but it's not difficult. There are dotted lines on the double turn lanes, but it seems like almost every time, the outside lane driver always cuts into the inside lane.

Blinkers: Do you believe that other drivers can read your mind and know exactly what your intentions are? You do realize there are other drivers out there, right?

On-ramp speed: This is common sense but often overlooked. The on-ramps to the interstate system is designed so you can get up to speed and merge with traffic. However, there is a yield sign there so if both lanes are busy, you need to yield.

The stubborn left turn driver: Why some drivers insist on taking a left turn out of a large busy intersection parking lot during busy drive times is something we'll only know the answer to in the afterlife - right along with who shot Kennedy, who was the real DB Cooper, and the location of Noah's Ark. Seriously, just take a right already.

Stay with the car in front of you: Traffic seems to flow better when you can just stay with the vehicle in front of you. OK...if they're a speed demon, just let them go, but why do some numbnuts people feel the need to go 25 in a 40 mph zone?

Green light etiquette: Seriously, how many times has the light turned green at a busy intersection, and some yahoo is on their phone or not paying attention? The waiting game begins for several motorists behind them. For the love of all things with a motor, just pay attention and set the phone down!

"Let-them-in-ers": Yes, it is considered a "kind" thing to do to "let someone in" by holding up traffic. But when you cannot control all of the lanes you are letting them into, it becomes a problem and people get hurt. If you create a gap at a stoplight by letting cars "in" and they get hit by someone in the turn lane or the next lane, who is at fault?

Highway speed: If you are going 45 on a 65 mph South Dakota highway, just admiring the corn fields with no regard for the vehicles behind you, YOU are the most dangerous person on that highway. Inevitably, someone will lose patience and pull a risky pass of several cars on a two-lane road. This becomes a very dangerous situation when multiple cars are trying to pass.

The "quarter mile in a turn lane person": We've all seen it. Someone travelling in the turn lane a long way from the light so they don't miss the next green turn arrow. Most drivers will use the turn lane when the road markings indicate the turn lane begins. But then there's always someone getting ahead of everyone else by travelling a quarter mile at 35 mph next to the cars waiting to properly turn in the designated turn lane. Many accident are caused by prematurely cruising in the turn lane.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments! Drive safe!

It's important to note that you should not fall into a fit of road rage if someone is making an error in traffic. Using patience and "letting it go" can go a long way toward proper etiquette on the roads, especially when you have kids in the car. Coarse language and rude gestures can lead to younger people picking up those habits from mom and dad.
