The Smallest Town In Minnesota Also Has A Funny Sounding Name!
Have you ever heard of the smallest town in Minnesota with a name that might make you chuckle!?
Funkley in northern Minnesota holds the distinction of being the smallest incorporated municipality in the state.
Funkly is located just off of Highway 71 in Beltrami County, Minnesota.
No need to Google places to eat or stay in Funkly...there aren't any.
The town was originally established during Minnesota's logging boom era and is named after Henry Funkley, a county attorney and judge who served in the early 1900s.
Like many small settlements in northern Minnesota, Funkley's history is intertwined with the region's timber industry.
Despite its tiny size Funkley has managed to maintain its incorporation status over the decades.
The town's population has remained remarkably stable at around 5-15 residents for many years.
With just 12 residents as of 2023, every citizen plays a role in the community's continued existence.
One of Funkley's claims to fame was its former bar, known as Funkley Bar, which notably issued its own "Funkley Bucks"...a form of local currency that could be spent at the establishment.
This quirky tradition helped put the tiny town on the map and attracted curious visitors from around the state.
Despite its size Funkley continues to fulfill its basic governmental responsibilities.
