We've all gotten those calls, or texts, or even emails- -

  • "There is a warrant out for your arrest unless you pay "X" amount of money right now!"
  • "We're having trouble delivering a package to you, so click on this link and give us all your info"
  • "You've won a big prize, but there are a few things we need to know before we deliver it to you."

I "won" a cruise decades ago and learned that all I had to do was pay for everything and give them all my information. Needless to say, I didn't go on the cruise or give them any of my personal info, but at first, I was pretty excited.

Here are just a few of the numbers you should never answer and/or respond to according to Been Verified:

  •  Call (469) 709-7630 for Failed Delivery Attempt

  • Call (805) 637-7243, You've Won Publisher's Clearinghouse!

  • Call now (858) 605-9622 your Bank Account is temporarily ON HOLD!

  • Call (863) 532-7969 Immediately, your Debit Card is Frozen

  • Call (312) 339-1227 to lose weight or track your parcel- scammers will use the same numbers for various scams.

  • Call (301) 307-4601 US Post package on hold for address issue

These are just a few of the many phone numbers looking to gain all your personal information. Don't call the numbers back, don't click on links that you're sent. Don't get taken!

Here are tips from the South Dakota Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division on how to handle such scam calls:

  • Know that spammers can spoof the phone number they are calling from to make it appear that the call is actually coming from a law enforcement agency.
  • Be cautious about answering a call from a telephone number you don’t recognize.
  • If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the law enforcement agency at its official number. Do not trust the telephone number that might be provided.
  • Do not give into high-pressure tactics or threats to provide money.
  • Never provide personal or financial information over the telephone.
  • Do not deposit a check and then wire money.
  • Hang up on robocalls.
  • Talk to someone you can trust before you provide money or personal information to someone who contacts you.

Consumers who believe they may have been a victim of any type of scam should contact the Attorney General’s Office's Consumer Protection Division online or at 1-800-300-1986.
