South Dakotans Without a Real ID Better Hurry If You’re Traveling
If you're planning a trip by air anytime soon, you must have a REAL ID. What is it, and what does that mean for South Dakota travelers?
Beginning May 7, a South Dakota driver's license that is not REAL ID compliant will not be accepted as a valid form of identification at airports. If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Here are some examples of REAL ID compliant symbols:
According to the Minnehaha Sheriff's Office:
- Passengers traveling after this enforcement deadline should travel with an acceptable alternative form of ID, like a passport, or enroll for a state-issued REAL ID through their state DMV offices.
- Passengers who do not yet have their REAL ID or another TSA-acceptable form of ID can expect delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being allowed into the security checkpoint.
- REAL ID compliance includes TSA PreCheck passengers.
Additionally, if you don't have an acceptable ID, you may be asked for additional identifying information. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening.
The TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.
So if you don't have your REAL ID yet and you're planning to travel on May 7 and beyond, time is counting down.
