I know this news will upset many people, but, for all intents and purposes road construction season in Sioux Falls is over for another year.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but, the chances are very good you'll be seeing far fewer orange road construction cones and road closed signs over the next few months until Old Man Winter is done doing his thing next spring.

Sioux Falls city engineers officially put the wraps on another road construction season on Wednesday, (November 6), as they presented an overview of the 2024 construction season to the public.

Motorists can expect to see a major slowdown in road construction work over the next few months throughout the Sioux Empire.

Dakota News Now reports that during the briefing, engineers detailed the work that was done to the first and second diverging diamond interchanges, the resurfacing of more than 630 blocks of neighborhood streets, along with several other road construction projects that were conducted throughout the 2024 season.

City Engineer, Andy Berg told Dakota News Now, “This was a banner season for street construction, particularly with the completion of multiple years-long projects, like the DDIs and Sixth Street bridge and roadway, and making great progress on South Veterans Parkway,” said Andy Berg, City Engineer. “As Sioux Falls grows, we are seeing larger, more complex projects. While we certainly take a moment to celebrate the completion of those, we are already starting on the next ones that will also help to transform our roadways, like the Interstate 229 and Cliff Avenue interchange.”

What's planned for 2025?

Two of the bigger projects include continued work on the South Veterans Parkway and a project happening at Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229.

Dakota News Now reports that the South Veterans Parkway job is a multi-year project that is slated for completion in 2027. Crews will continue to work during the winter months on this particular project when able.

Another major project on the docket in 2025 will be reconstructing the interchange at Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229. According to Dakota News Now, the goal here is to improve traffic flow and safety while addressing geometric deficiencies like uneven surfaces, lengthening turn lanes, improved sight distances, deteriorating pavement conditions, and the lack of connectivity for non-vehicle users like bicyclists and pedestrians.

This project also includes the addition of 10-foot sidewalks on both sides of Cliff Avenue and two pedestrian/bicycle tunnels under the interchange ramps on the east side of Cliff Avenue.

Work on this is scheduled to begin in 2025 and be fully completed sometime in 2026.
