Two Sioux Falls city park playground areas are getting facelifts this summer.

It's all part of the city's ongoing effort to refresh neighborhood parks and playgrounds. This summer, it's Lyon Park, located at 600 S. Phillips Avenue, and Prairie Trail Park, at 5309 S. Tomar Road on the city's south side, that are receiving brand-new playground equipment and several exciting improvements.

According to Pigeon 605, the playgrounds at both parks are more than 25 years old, making them long overdue for a makeover. City officials hope the new additions will create safer, more modern, and more inclusive places for kids throughout the Sioux Empire to play.

Pigeon 605 reports that construction is already underway at Lyon Park, where crews have removed the aging playground equipment. A brand-new, accessible play structure will soon take its place, allowing children of all abilities to enjoy the park together.

Prairie Trail Park is also in for a significant transformation. In addition to removing the existing playground, crews will take out the adjoining sidewalk and drinking fountain while leaving the basketball court in place.

When the project is complete, Prairie Trail Park will feature a new playground with poured-in-place safety surfacing, new benches, a shelter for parents and caregivers, and a modern fountain. The upgraded amenities are designed to make the park more comfortable and enjoyable for families who love to spend time outdoors.

One of the most exciting additions coming to both parks is a new generation of accessible playground equipment. The updated slides will include a ramp system that allows children using wheelchairs to transfer more easily and reach the highest point of the playground before taking the ride down. It's another step toward making Sioux Falls parks welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

The city expects work at both parks to wrap up by late summer or early fall. That should give Sioux Empire families plenty of opportunities to enjoy the new playgrounds before Old Man Winter sets up shop again in the Sioux Empire for another 5-plus months.
