Representative Johnson Pushes for Fireworks to Return to Mount Rushmore
Will freedom ring here in South Dakota again this 4th of July at Mount Rushmore?
South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson hopes skyrockets will once again be in flight this year at the National Monument on our nation's birthday.
Dakota News Now reports that Johnson recently penned a letter to newly sworn-in President Donald Trump, inviting him and Interior Secretary Doug Burgam to host another Independence Day celebration at the faces.

According to Dakota News Now, in the letter, Johnson says, "Celebrating our nation’s independence at the foot of Mount Rushmore is quintessentially American. Whether it’s fireworks, drones, lasers, or something else, a show brings another level of energy to the patriotic celebration. I hope President Trump and Secretary Burgum can join the festivities at our historic national landmark.”
The last time fireworks lit up the night sky at Mount Rushmore was back in 2020 during Donald Trump's first administration.
Former President Joe Biden and the National Parks Service put the kibosh on the fireworks celebrations during the four years of his presidency by rejecting the permit applications for proposed celebrations in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Representative Johnson has attended previous 4th of July celebrations at Mount Rushmore and would love to see the state resume Independence Day festivities at the National Monument starting this July.
