The large cat was spotted, and Duluth Public Schools immediately implemented a "Secure Status" protocol at both Ordean East Middle School and nearby Congdon Park Elementary.

This precautionary measure kept students and staff safe indoors while allowing classes to continue normally.

The lockdown lasted approximately 40 minutes before being lifted.

School administrators worked closely with the Duluth Police Department and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to monitor the situation.

Once wildlife officials confirmed the mountain lion had moved away from the immediate area, the secure status was ended, and normal activities resumed.

The mountain lion was presumed to have migrated to northern Minnesota from Nebraska as it was wearing an inactive tracking collar.

While mountain lion sightings are relatively uncommon in Minnesota, they do occur occasionally as these wide-ranging animals pass through the region.

Mountain lions are a protected species in Minnesota, and you are not allowed to shoot the cats.

The DNR reminds residents that if they encounter a mountain lion or other large wildlife, they should never approach the animal.

Instead, maintain a safe distance, make yourself appear larger, and slowly back away while keeping the animal in sight.
