Quick question for you: do you own a dog? And more importantly, does your four-legged friend think they’re an elite athlete… or just really good at napping?

If your household is home to a canine that’s part Underdog, part Air Bud, and 100% convinced they were born to compete, Sioux Falls has just the event for you. The city is inviting dog owners and their energetic pups to the 5th Annual Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation K9 Root Beer Keg Races, happening Saturday, January 10, at Spencer Dog Park, located at 3501 South Cliff Avenue.

According to Dakota News Now, dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds are welcome to join in on the fun. Yes, that includes the tiny speed demons and all those lumbering big sweeties too!

So how exactly does this all work?

Each dog will be placed into a weight class and fitted with a harness attached to a root beer keg sized just right for them. Then it’s go time. The pups will race head-to-head with one simple goal: pull that keg across the finish line as fast as possible. Every dog will be timed, and the quickest canine in each weight class will earn bragging rights and likely extra treats from its owner.

The event is completely free, and no advance registration is needed. Just show up with your dog and let the chaos unfold.

Special thanks goes out to the K9-loving crew at Dakota Beverage of Sioux Falls for donating all the root beer kegs used during the event.

Registration opens at 1:00 PM sharp, with races starting promptly at 1:30 PM.

Win or lose, your dog will leave feeling like a champion, and probably feeling like they just ran a full marathon in a fur coat.

5 Things South Dakota Gave the World

South Dakota may not get much respect. We get a blizzard and it's a footnote on the national scene, but if Florida gets a bit chilly it's breaking news. But, maybe it's fine to be forgotten about. We kind of like being left alone on our quiet piece of the plains.

South Dakota has given a lot to the world though. Not just giant mountain carvings and settings for HBO shows, but awesome things that the rest of the world should thank us for.
