Fentanyl Found On South Dakota Sidewalk By High Schooler
The discovery of dangerous drugs on a small town South Dakota sidewalk has prompted urgent safety warnings from local law enforcement.
According to Dakota News Now, a high school student found a syringe full of fentanyl on a sidewalk, leading police to issue a community-wide alert about the deadly substance.
Police in Gettysburg, South Dakota, posted that a student turned in the suspicious syringe he found, and tests confirmed the contents were fentanyl.
The liquid was fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has become a leading cause of overdose deaths nationwide.
Even microscopic amounts of the drug can prove fatal, particularly to children and teens who might unknowingly come into contact with it.
Gettysburg authorities urged parents to “Parents, please tell your children that if they find anything that looks dangerous to please stay away from it and contact your local police.”
Parents and community members are encouraged to maintain open conversations with young people about drug safety and the importance of reporting dangerous discoveries to authorities.
Quick thinking and responsible action by the Gettysburg student potentially prevented a tragedy.
