Spring Fever Hits Sioux Falls: Golfers Flock to February Tee Times
I haven't even seen a Robin yet, but there are people already on golf courses in the Sioux Empire, so I guess that means spring can't be that far away, right?
The warmer weather we've had over the past few days here in the Sioux Falls area has had many people itching to get outdoors. So much so, that a few area golf courses have already opened up their doors.
One of those golf courses is Rocky Run in Dell Rapids. They made a rare February start by opening their course to golfers on Friday (February 28), and even with the galeforce winds we experienced on Friday, it didn't stop some golf enthusiasts who were chomping at the bit to hit the links.

Dakota News Now reports that Rocky Run would be open year-round if it was up to them, but Mother Nature typically has other plans. However, when we get these rare mild weather days in February and March they make the most of the opportunity.
Justin Synder, Head Golf Professional at Rock Road told Dakota News Now, “It’s still not what a non-golfer would consider favorable weather for golf, but yet they’re out there enjoying it, loving it. We’re not seeing anybody posting any scores or anything. They’re just getting out, getting some exercise, having some fun.”
According to Dakota News Now, all the Great Life Courses made plans to open up for five days starting last Thursday. Tee times really picked up by Sunday, once the wind stopped blowing and the temps warmed up.
However, it still wasn't business as usual on the courses. For instance, at Rocky Road, you can only walk the course right now. No golf carts are allowed at this time, due to the mushy grass conditions at the moment.
Those fairways are about to get a whole lot mushier over the next couple of days if the weatherman is correct.
If you haven't heard yet, the forecast here for the Sioux Empire calls for 2 to 4 inches of snow starting on Tuesday, with gusty 50mph winds again.
Not exactly ideal golfing weather. Looks like Mother Nature just be the kibosh on your golf game again! Gee, thanks, ma!
Welcome to the unpredictability of March in South Dakota! The good news, the month of April, and what will hopefully be consistently nicer golfing weather is getting closer with every passing day.
