The remaining Delbridge family has given their blessing to move the Great Plains Zoo taxidermy collection out of South Dakota

According to Dakota News Now...A group tasked with finding options for the over 100 Delbridge taxidermy animals met Monday to discuss relocating Sioux Falls' historic Brockhouse collection.

The collection, originally purchased by C.J. Delbridge and donated to the city by the Delbridge family, has received support for relocation from Jane Delbridge and Joyce Fischer, the two surviving Delbridge sisters.

Following an application process, the University of Notre Dame would receive the majority of the collection, previously housed at the Delbridge Museum of Natural History.

Additional pieces would be distributed to institutions in Georgia and New Jersey.

The collection would be gifted rather than sold.

The proposed move is primarily driven by maintenance challenges of the aging collection and chemical contamination of some of the mounts.

City officials will vote on February 11th on designating the collection as surplus property, which would enable the transfer.

Sioux Falls City Councilor Curt Soehl stated, “The biggest piece of information that’s come forward just in the last two weeks is the fact that the Delbridge sisters, the surviving sisters, would agree to move this to Notre Dame. I cannot tell you, for me personally, how powerful that is to make this thing go forward. That’s a piece of powerful information. I appreciate the fact that that has been done and they have given their blessing to that."

C.J. Delbridge purchased the collection at auction from the Brockhouse family in 1981 for $550,000.

Since 1984, it has been displayed at the Great Plains Zoo as the Delbridge Museum of Natural History, following Delbridge's donation to Sioux Falls for community benefit.
