Fall Is Here-And So Are the Garden Challenges!

Fall in South Dakota is a beautiful season, but for gardeners, and I loosely call myself one, it can bring a few headaches. Cooler nights, shorter days, and that race to finish up your harvest before the first frost. The stress is real, it’s a lot to keep up with!

One question I hear a lot this time of year: When should you pick your tomatoes?

When to Pick Tomatoes-Red or Almost Red?

If your tomatoes are still green, don’t panic. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Green tomatoes – Leave them on the vine if the weather’s warm enough. They need time. Some people swear by frying them, but I have yet to try that. [Good luck if you are growing Yellow Tomatoes!]

  • Turning color (blushing) – If they’re starting to change, you can pick them! They’ll finish ripening indoors on your counter. I've been doing this and it seems to work pretty darn good!

  • Fully red – Go ahead and grab them before pests or frost do!

Pro tip: Picking them a little early can save them from splitting or frost damage. Just keep them out of the fridge so they ripen naturally. Another thing, don't forget to water your tomatoes. If you miss a few days, then water, you might end up with some splitting going on!

Fruit Flies Driving You Nuts?

You’re not alone! This time of year, those tiny pests love hanging around ripening fruit and veggies. A few ways to fight back:

  • Keep counters clean and don’t leave fruit out too long

  • Make a trap with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap in a small cup. This works. Sorta, kinda good!

  • Empty your trash and compost often. Oh, and try not to leave a bunch of tomato tops in your sink all weekend long too!

Those little guys can be relentless, but these tricks usually do the job!
