A unique species of yellowjacket from Central America has just been spotted in the New England area and is making its way across the country. It's known as the Vespula squamosa (Southern Yellowjacket). They have a "distinctive black and yellow patterning and orange queen." What makes this species of yellowjacket so violent and aggressive? According to an article from MedicineNet.com, they have a "shorter fuse."

Yellowjackets are very aggressive and sting or bite when they are disturbed or even when they feel any threat. They attack you when you are in their vicinity even if you do not disturb them.

Southern Yellowjackets' nests are the pride and joy of these aggressive insects. They are hidden underground or above near yards. The nests are massive and sensitive. Any movement could cause the nests to break, which makes the yellowjackets very mad.  Along with building nests, their mission is to hunt for food. They get irritated and aggressive when hungry, just like people!

How bad is a southern yellowjacket's sting? Some describe it as "excruciating agony." The pain of the sting can last for a few hours. Some people could die from this powerful sting.

Until Jack Frost makes an appearance, Southern Yellowjackets can be hiding anywhere in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. Here are some tips to stay safe:
